Om Namo Bhagavade Sivanandaya

Established in 1949 by Sri Swami Sivananda

“It is through the medium and Grace of the spiritual preceptor that the individual can raise himself to Cosmic Consciousness. The Guru is verily a link between the individual and the Immortal. He is a being who has raised himself from this to That, and thus has a free and unhampered access to both realms. He stands, as it were, upon the threshold of immortality and, bending down, raises the struggling aspirants with his one hand, and with the other, lifts them up into the kingdom of everlasting happiness and infinite Truth-Consciousness.

As an offering to our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, and to pray for world peace, Divine Life Society of SA will be commencing our 41 Day Sri Hanuman Chalisa Recital on Tuesday, 26 July 2016. The recital will continue for 41 days and culminate on Sunday, 4 September, coninciding with the 129th Birth Anniversary celebrations of our Divine Master to be held at Sivananda Stadium.

From the early years, devotees of Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swamiji in Gauteng (then Transvaal) have been conducting Satsangs at the homes of devotees, in classrooms, etc. The Gauteng branch of the Divine Life Society of S.A. was formed in the early 1990's.

In 2002, Pujya Swamiji opened an Ashram in Gauteng, called Sivananda Yoga Centre. It is located in the south of Johannesburg in Zakariyya Park, Lenasia. A beautiful shrine and Ganga Rani (water fountain consecrated with holy Ganga water) adorns the Prayer Hall.

Activities at the Centre include Ganga Arati, Satsangs, grocery hamper distribution, dissemination of spiritual literature, youth events, Yoga Retreats and Sunday School for Spiritual Darlings (children). The Branch has grown considerably, and celebrates major events in the Hindu and Divine Life Society calendar.

The weekly Sunday School, in particular, has been an attraction for parents who wish to ensure that their children lead a path of righteousness and maintain their Hindu Dharma in the current age of Kali Yuga. With little access to the wisdom of previous generations, spiritual and religious guidance is quite often a challenge faced by parents residing in Gauteng. At the Divine Life Society Ashram, parents attend Satsang while their children are spiritually moulded and educated.

In addition to the main Satsang which takes place at the Ashram on a Sunday from 9:40am - 12pm, the branch also conducts Satsang on Tuesday evenings in Sandton, north of Johannesburg from 7 - 8pm. For more information on the Gauteng Branch of Divine Life Society of S.A contact Kuben Thavar ‪082 600 0079‬

Devotees gathered in large numbers on Sunday, 10 July 2016 to celebrate the 91st Birth Anniversary of Pujya Swami Sahajananda at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills. The programme commenced at 6am with a short invocation, Ganga Arati and chanting followed by Darshan at Pujya Swamiji's Kutir, Pujya Swamiji's sacred room and Sahajananda Diamond Jubilee Centre. After breakfast, there was a special Children's Hour where the future custodians of the Society from our branches inspired and entertained us with plays, melodious Bhajans & Kirtans, demonstrations and talks.

Our next Yoga Camp will be on Sunday, 26 June 2016. At this Camp we will have our Inter-house athletics and sports programme. We have items for all age groups. Branches fall into the following houses: Vishwananda, Sivananda and Ganga houses.
