The Tongaat Branch of Divine Life Society of South Africa celebrated its 72nd Anniversary on Saturday, 24 October 2026 at the Tongaat South Vishnu Temple in Buffelsdale, Tongaat. The occasion was a tribute to more than seven decades of spiritual dedication, community service, dissemination of Sri Swami Sivananda’s teachings and continuation of Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s legacies.

The anniversary brought together devotees, well-wishers, guest artistes and family members of the pioneers and community, in a spirit of prayer, nostalgia, gratitude and reverence. It was not merely a celebration of the Branch’s longevity, but an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual ideals that have sustained its work, and to renew the collective commitment to the noble mission of Divine Life Society of South Africa.

The anniversary celebrations commenced with a Homa at 2pm, to the repetition of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times, invoking divine blessings for the Branch, its devotees and for peace in the world. Viewing of exhibits and visits to stalls provided an opportunity for reflection on the early history of the branch, followed by Ganga Arati at 3.20pm and Satsang thereafter.

A Ramayana recital by the Rishikumaris added a further devotional dimension to the programme. Through the sacred verses and inspiring ideals of the Ramayana, the audience was reminded of the enduring values of righteousness, loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice and unwavering devotion to the Divine. A special group welcome by the Tongaat Branch devotees and family members of the pioneers, added to the grandeur of the occasion.

The message from the Board of Management acknowledged the role of the pioneers, the dedicated service of the Branch, and also recognised the anniversary as an occasion to honour the past while looking ahead with renewed dedication to the Society’s spiritual mission. The message further stated that guided by Sri Swami Sivananda’s immortal message, “Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise”, the Branch continues to provide a sacred space for prayer, Satsang and spiritual growth. Inspired by Pujya Swami Sahajananda’s life of humility, discipline and selfless service, devotees are reminded that the true worth of a spiritual institution lies not in its longevity, but in “the lives it touches, the minds it inspires, and the hearts it transforms”. The message concluded with the wish that this milestone renews commitment to unity, nurtures future generations and deepens our resolve to “live the Divine Life” through prayer, compassion, Seva, charity and universal love – the cardinal teachings of Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda.

Another highlight of the programme was a play reading presented by the Tongaat Branch on the “Power of Prayer”, which emphasised Sri Swami Sivananda’s profound message that prayer is the panacea for all ills. This was followed by an outstanding dance performance by Kumari Verona’s Dance Institute, adding cultural richness and artistic expression to the celebration.

The historical significance of the occasion was further emphasised by a presentation on the “History of the Tongaat Branch” by Professor Suvira Ramlall. Such a reflection on the Branch’s journey offered an opportunity to appreciate the foundations laid by earlier devotees and the dedication required to sustain a spiritual institution across generations. The Tongaat Branch of Divine Life Society of South Africa was established in 1954, following the inspiration of Sri Swami Sahajananda (then V. Srinivasan), who encouraged Sri R.E. Naidoo, a founding member of the Tongaat Hindu Sabha, to establish the Branch. Pujya Swamiji himself presided over its official opening. Its origins are linked to the pioneering work of Sri Swami Sivananda’s early South African devotees, including Father Padayachee of Umkomaas, Sri E.R. Naidoo, Sri and Srimati M. A. Naidoo of Tongaat, and Sri V. Srinivasan of Estcourt. Sri Swami Sivananda personally congratulated the Tongaat Branch on its formation and sent good wishes.

Prof Ramlall further explained that for 25 years, the Tongaat Branch conducted its weekly services at the historic, 114-year-old Tongaat Hindu Sabha Temple. Sunday and Monday Satsangs, Wednesday Bhagavad Gita classes and religious festivals nurtured devotion and brought together Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Gujarati speaking communities in prayer and worship. Sri R.E. Naidoo also made a lasting contribution by donating the land on which the Sivananda International Cultural Centre (SICC) now stands. Following SICC’s completion, Pujya Swami Sahajananda allowed Tongaat Branch devotees to conduct their Satsangs in Ganga Rani.

The anniversary programme also celebrated the uplifting power of music and the performing arts. Outstanding guest artistes, “Indian Rhythm”, featuring Melanie Muruvan and her family, brought an additional element of cultural expression to the gathering.

The cutting of the anniversary cake by a senior devotee provided a special moment of collective celebration, honouring the milestone and the contributions of those who have helped nurture the Branch over the years.

In this spirit, the 72nd anniversary was an occasion not only to celebrate what the Tongaat Branch has achieved, but also to renew its commitment to the ideals that give Divine Life Society of South Africa its enduring purpose, for Sri Swami Sivananda consistently emphasised that spirituality must be practised rather than merely discussed. His teachings encourage every individual to transform noble thoughts into righteous action, selfishness into generosity, and indifference into loving service.

As the Tongaat Branch celebrates this significant milestone, the occasion offers an opportunity to acknowledge all past and present devotees, office-bearers, volunteers, donors and well-wishers, whose contributions have supported its journey. The true measure of an anniversary lies not only in the years commemorated, but in the lives touched, the hearts uplifted and the spirit of service carried forward. The Tongaat Branch has done this admirably. May the Branch continue to serve as a beacon of spiritual light to the community of Tongaat and its surrounds, thus spreading the message of Sri Swami Sivananda’s Divine Life. The continued existence of the Tongaat Branch is a reminder that sincere service, performed with faith and perseverance, can leave an enduring imprint on the lives of many.

Congratulations Tongaat Branch. You have done Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swami Sahajananda proud. May the divine blessings of Sri Gurudev and Pujya Swamiji continue to guide the Tongaat Branch for many more years.
