Pujya Swami Sahajananda's 93rd Birth Anniversary was celebrated on Tuesday, 10 July at Sivanandashram, Reservoir Hills. ln celebrating Pujya Swami Sahajanandaji's 93rd birthday, we offer our gratitude to our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda and Pujya Swamiji for laying at our disposal, the fruits of their Tapas and Sadhana by way of the vast spiritual literature, our Ashrams and centres, etc. ln honouring Pujya Swamiji, who was a Maharishi who came to guide and nurture us, we are reminded how, in spite of his greatness, he advised us to give prominence and adoration to the Divine Master. We know from the Master's own words that he worked through Pujya Swamiji and therefore Guru and disciple had become one in spirit. Such was Pujya Swamiji's stature! For this we revere Swamiji as the greatest disciple of the Master. Pujya Swamiji's Guru Bhakti can be compared to that of Sri Hanuman. Like Sri Hanuman who was one with Lord Rama, and stood humbly as a devotee to the Lord, so did our Swamiji hide the spiritual giant that he was and lived only to glorify the Master. The Master's Divine power flowed effortlessly through Pujya Swamiji.

In commemoration of the legendary and unparalleled work done by Pujya Swamiji in this country, through 300 social upliftment programmes and dissemination of spiritual literature, we launched a publication called Yoga for Health. It is a fitting offering as this book focuses on the three main Yogas, namely, Hatha Yoga, Pranayama and the Yoga of Meditation. So, the topics covered in this book will be of special interest to all those who seek alternative forms of treatment for their ailments and tread the path of spirituality in earnest. Research by eminent scientists have confirmed that these practices contribute to the mental and physical well-being of practitioners.

Pujya Swamiji had mastered all three of the above mentioned Yogas. In addition, he was also a great exponent of Karma Yoga, Japa Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. We read a letter from our Divine Master, written to Pujya Swamiji on 13 August 1956 in which the Master states, "All the letters I get from South Africa, Mombasa, Nairobi contains pages of your glory and the great impression you have created among the devotees. It is all due to the Grace of the Lord and the purity you have attained through Para Bhakti. When you advance in Sadhana, there is a marvellous, mysterious power coming from every bit of your actions and words. May you gloriously prosper".

In the audio message, Pujya Swamiji focused on the role of self-surrender in spiritual life. "When I was looking for a Guru, I said to myself that when I find a Master, I will give myself completely to him. When I went to the Ashram in 1956, the thought came to me 'What does Gurudev want me to do? What path to follow?' And it came from within, the path of self-surrender. But it is very, very difficult. I can honestly say that perhaps I have gone about 40 or 50% of the way. Only when you are tested and tried, innumerable times and when the mind is still and steady and absolutely calm under all conditions, then you can say that you have attained self-surrender. You can realise God within but you need not completely change the external nature. Gurudev and Sri Aurobindo want a complete change. Some of the change comes only after you realise God. For that type of change, which I also like, self-surrender is the way. It is the only path that can completely get rid of all sorrow, pain and suffering, once and for all."

The poems, Siva Divine (a poem written by Pujya Swamiji as a tribute to the Divine Master), The Greatest Servant and The Call of the Wild were dedicated to Pujya Swamiji and encapsulated the teachings of our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda, the virtues of loyalty, obedience and Guru Bhakti of Pujya Swamiji and compassion for animals, respectively.

On behalf of all devotees, we thank our Divine Master, Sri Swami Sivananda for blessing us with his foremost disciple Sri Swami Sahajananda. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to Pujya Swamiji for the deep love Swamiji has for all of us and the care with which he continues to guide and shape our lives. We thank Swamiji for accepting us into the Ashram and we pray that we may have the devotion, loyalty and sincerity to follow Swamiji's directives in our daily lives.
